The San Francisco 49ers might have a need for a backup quarterback if they do not re-sign Sam Darnold, and a very familiar face is set to be back on the market in 2024 free agency.

It was confirmed on Friday that Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would be suspended for the first two games of the 2024 season for violating the NFL's. Performance Enhancing Substances Policy.

Both ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported the Raiders plan to release Garoppolo.

That will happen before the fifth day of the new league year, when he is due an $11.25 million roster bonus.

Despite his intimate knowledge of the Kyle Shanahan offense, there's unlikely to be a reunion between the Niners and Garoppolo, who helped the 49ers to Super Bowl 54 in the 2019 season.

Garoppolo's well-documented injury history was one of the primary reasons behind the 49ers' desire to move on from him, which stemmed back to the 2021 trade for Trey Lance. Garoppolo departed after the 2022 campaign.

The durability concerns have not gone away, and Garoppolo's stock has only diminished in Las Vegas, as he was essentially benched for Aidan O'Connell following the Raiders' decision to fire Josh McDaniels as head coach last season.

Add in the suspension, the unnecessary attention it would bring and a relationship with Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan that appeared non-existent when Shanahan last commented on his former quarterback back in August, and there's little reason to believe San Francisco will be contacting Garoppolo when he becomes a free agent.
