The San Francisco 49ers swept the Seattle Seahawks for the second successive season, with their 28-16 victory confirmed by Fred Warner's interception in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter.
Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf was clearly frustrated at losing to the 49ers for the fifth straight time, including last season's Wild Card game, and chose to take his anger out on Warner.
After Warner lateraled the ball to Dre Greenlaw, Metcalf slammed the linebacker to the turf and had two hands on the All-Pro's facemask as they scuffled at the conclusion of the play. That prompted an angry reaction from the 49ers, with cornerback Deommodore Lenoir among those to come to Warner's aid.
Lenoir gave Metcalf a hard shove, with the resulting fracas taking a long time for the officials to break up.
When they eventually settled things down, both Lenoir and Metcalf were ejected from the game, and afterwards Warner had some words of wisdom for the Seattle wideout.
"I don’t know what happened man," Warner told a post-game press conference when asked about the incident.
"I told him he tackles really well and for some reason he didn’t like that and I guess what happened happened.
"It’s unfortunate, he’s got to learn to keep his composure."
While Warner stressed he did not want Lenoir putting himself in situations that hurt himself or the team, he was grateful for the support his teammate showed.
"I always appreciate guys protecting each other out there," Warner added. "That doesn’t surprise me one bit."
