The San Francisco 49ers were approaching free agency with cap space at a premium, but they've been given a little bit of relief by one of their best players.

All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, restructured his contract last week, converting a large amount of his base salary into a signing bonus.

Details of the restructure have yet to be disclosed, but Warner's decision should create cap space for the 49ers as they look to replenish a roster that was a few plays away from winning the Super Bowl last month.

Over The Cap had the 49ers as being $285,281 over the cap as the NFL's negotiating period opened, but that figure did not take into account an extension for right tackle Colton McKivitz. The decision to release Arik Armstead, likely as a post-June 1 cut, will create significant room.

While Armstead reportedly did not agree to a restructure to reduce his salary, Warner has provided further assistance to the 49ers.

San Francisco is expected to aggressively pursue edge rushers in the draft, and the 49ers' front seven could well improve for the 2024 season because of one of the best players in that group.
