The NFL's legal tampering period is only a few hours away, so it's important for teams to lock up their most-wanted players before teams are allowed to start talking to them.

That's exactly what the San Fransisco 49ers did with Tashaun Gipson on Sunday. Tipson was set to enter free agency, but John Lynch and co. stepped in and gave him a new one-year deal.

It's great news for Gipson, who signed with the 49ers before the start of the 2022 season. He became a crucial piece in the secondary, as he started all 17 games and led the team with five interceptions.

Gipson will be 33-years-old when the 2023 regular season starts in September, so he wasn't going to command a big contract in free agency. Despite his 2022 success.

And sure enough, both parties were able to agree on a one-year deal worth up to $2.9 million per A to Z Sports' Doug Kyed:

The three void years stretch Gipson's $1 million signing bonus out over the course of four years, so, the 49ers will have approximately $750k in 2024 dead money if Gipson isn't on the roster by the fifth day of the 2024 waiver period.

It's a solid move for the 49ers, who aren't in the best position cap-wise. The team can still make some moves -like extending Nick Bosa, for one- in order to create significant space, but it obviously remains to be seen if that happens or not.

But, in the vacuum of Gipson, the 49ers get a reliable, productive veteran for an affordable price – which is always a good process in the NFL.
