Kyle Shanahan had hoped George Kittle would be able to return to practice on Monday. Those hopes proved misplaced.

Kittle, who has been dealing with an adductor injury, was not on the field on Monday as the 49ers began their week of practice ahead of the season opener with the Steelers on Sunday.

San Francisco's star tight end was among several players seen sprinting on a side field during the session.

It's early in the week, and the likelihood is the Niners are being cautious with one of their most important players knowing he will have the benefit of a day off on Tuesday, but Kittle's absence does not inspire confidence that a star who has not played a full season since 2018 will be ready in time for the opener.

Kittle is of substantial importance to the 49ers. He developed an outstanding rapport with quarterback Brock Purdy down the stretch last season and brings blocking ability that will be especially valuable against a Steelers team that is stacked with talent across the defensive line.

An excellent run blocker who can provide significant assistance as a pass blocker, Kittle will likely be asked to provide regular chip help to right tackle Colton McKivitz to attempt to prevent T.J. Watt and company from derailing the San Francisco offense.

His status as one of the focal points of the offense is sure to be a big factor in the 49ers electing not to rush Kittle back to practice at this point in the week, but the level of concern will escalate substantially if he is not back in the fold on Wednesday.
