Roger Craig has waited a long time, but he is now just a couple of steps away from enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The former 49ers running back survived a cutdown of 31 semifinalists in the seniors category, which is for players who retired no later than 1998. Craig, who called it a career after the 1993 season, is one of 12 remaining semifinalists.
The Seniors Committee will meet on Aug. 22 and can pick up to three players as finalists for the Hall of Fame. Last year, all three seniors selected by the committee were elected to the Hall of Fame.
That potentially bodes well for Craig, who has a tremendous resume for enshrinement in Canton.
Craig won three Super Bowls with the 49ers in the 1980s. He was the Offensive Player of the Year in 1988 and was a member of the '80s All-Decade team.
He also made history in 1985, becoming the first NFL player to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.
That sparkling list of achievements has not yet been enough for him to receive a gold jacket, and Craig will have his fingers crossed the selection committee finally decides to give him his due for what is undeniably a Hall of Fame worthy career.
