The 49ers have severe problems at kicker heading into the regular season, but one of the potential fixes could deal a blow to a potential NFC rival.
San Francisco has no healthy kickers ahead of roster cutdown day on Tuesday. Rookie Jake Moody is considered "week to week" with a strained quad while Zane Gonzalez suffered a hamstring injury in the preseason finale with the Chargers.
That situation left Kyle Shanahan to concede the 49ers need a Plan B, and a possible solution could see them get one over on a Packers team they have haunted in recent years.
Mason Crosby is a free agent but the Packers veteran of 16 season wants to continue playing, and looms as an option for Green Bay amid rookie Anders Carlson's up and down preseason.
Carlson, the Packers' sixth-round pick out of Auburn, has made both his preseason field goals but has missed two of his seven extra points.
His inconsistency in that regard follows a training camp in which field goal attempts proved a lottery, with Carlson's struggles perhaps creating an opening for a Crosby return.
But there is a clearer window, at least to start the season, for Crosby to play in San Francisco. If Moody is not ready for Week 1, Crosby would given them a dependable veteran whom they can rely on until their third-round rookie is back to full health.
Victors over the Packers in the postseason in the 2019 and 2021 campaigns, the Niners could score a win of a different kind over Green Bay by signing Crosby.
The decision to draft Moody 99th overall looks increasingly questionable, but Crosby at least offers the 49ers a compelling contingency if the rookie is not ready.
