Levi's Stadium is not widely viewed as one of the most intimidating atmospheres in the NFL but, as the 49ers have ascended to one of the elite teams in the league, they have developed an excellent home-field advantage.
Over the last two seasons, the 49ers are 12-5 at home in the regular season. Only three of those defeats have been by more than one score.
Home-field advantage is a tough thing to definitively quantify. However, a project by Steven Patton attempted to do so, and his research revealed the Niners have had the biggest home field advantage in the NFL over the last two seasons.
In the simplest terms, Patton worked out the home-field advantage for each team by adding the league average home-field advantage, which he calculated to be just under two points over the last two seasons, to a team-specific home-field advantage. The team-specific home-field advantage represents the additional or fewer points each team has in home-field edge compared to that average.
The end result was that the 49ers home-field over the last two seasons being calculated as worth 2.77 points, the most in the NFL, with the Cowboys second on 2.35 points.
San Francisco's home advantage is more to do with the quality of the roster they have put together rather than the noise made by the crowd at Levi's Stadium. Still, given the stadium that has been much-maligned for a variety of reasons over the years, it may be an eyebrow-raiser to some to see the Niners atop the list.
But with success comes full stadiums and loud crowds, and that is what the 49ers have when their defense is on the field.
Starting with successive road games against the Steelers and the Rams, the Niners won't have the benefit of the home crowd until Week 3, though it could be argued they will have home-field advantage in Los Angeles, where Niners fans have appeared to vastly outnumber the home fans at SoFi Stadium in recent years.
However, four of their next six games after the first two weeks are at Levi's, and the 49ers will look to use the impact of home-field to put themselves in a strong position in the NFC before the Week 9 bye.
As long as the 49ers are in the mix as a contender, Levi's will be loud year in, year out. The calibre of the San Francisco roster and the volume of crowd noise should ensure road trips to the Bay Area remain an extremely difficult assignment for opponents.
