At the end of a week that saw Frank Gore hired to the 49ers' personnel department, another member of their 2012 NFC Champion roster joined the organization, albeit in a temporary capacity.

Former safety Dashon Goldson was announced as one of the 49ers' six Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellows.

Goldson spent six seasons with the 49ers from 2007 to 2012, establishing himself as a mainstay in the secondary and forming a hard-hitting safety duo with Donte Whitner during the first two seasons of Jim Harbaugh's tenure as head coach.

He was a Pro Bowler in 2011 and 2012, with Goldson also named first-team All-Pro in the latter season, which saw the 49ers reach Super Bowl XLVII only to lose a heartbreaker to the Ravens.

Goldson left in free agency after that campaign but will now be back with the 49ers to work with the defensive backs for the duration of training camp and preseason.

He should love working with a 49er defense that has a well-earned reputation for being fast and extremely physical and, having excelled at the free safety position, Goldson is another potentially very useful mentor for rookie third-round pick Ji'Ayir Brown, likely to be San Francisco's long-term starter at the position.

Goldson's hiring as a fellow is his first step on the NFL coaching ladder, and it could prove very beneficial for both him and the 49ers if he can manage to aid Brown's development in his short time on the staff.
