It's been known since Wednesday that Brock Purdy would be on the inactives list in the San Francisco 49ers' regular-season finale with the Los Angeles Rams.
Kyle Shanahan confirmed that fact five days ago, but it was thought he would be listed as emergency third quarterback.
But there has been a late change in the 49ers' plans, with their starting quarterback now listed as out in a coach's decision.
Brandon Allen will be the backup to Sam Darnold. If both those players get hurt, the 49ers won't have a healthy quarterback available.
In that unlikely scenario, the Niners would be left to run out their meaningless Week 18 game with the ground game, a situation they were forced into in last season's NFC Championship Game following injuries to Purdy and Josh Johnson, that turn of events inspiring a change in the rules to allow a third emergency QB on the inactives list.
It may seem a little bizarre that the 49ers aren't taking advantage of a rule they helped facilitate, but, with nothing riding on the game for the NFC one seed and Purdy having recently suffered a stinger, there's no reason for San Francisco to even risk the possibility of an injury to their starter.
The 49ers' inactives were known early in the week, with one change coming on Saturday as tight end Ross Dwelley was placed on injured reserve, allowing San Francisco to elevate Ray-Ray McCloud to the activate roster and list wide receiver Jauan Jennings as inactive for the third straight game with a concussion.
