The San Francisco 49ers head into the bye week back at .500 after holding on to beat the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football but, as has been typical in this arduous season, the victory came at a cost in terms of injuries.
While they did not lose anyone to a season-ending injury as was the case in last week's defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs when Brandon Aiyuk tore knee ligaments, the 49ers saw several players leave the 30-24 victory over Dallas.
Among them was Deebo Samuel, who played despite suffering from pneumonia earlier in the week, the wide receiver exiting with a rib injury.
Samuel did not return, and that was also the case for linebacker Dee Winters (concussion), cornerback Renardo Green (ankle) and running back Jordan Mason (shoulder).
Mason's injury is the same shoulder issue he suffered in the Week 6 win over the Seattle Seahawks, in which he sustained an AC joint sprain.
There is no word yet on the severity of the injury for second-round rookie Green, who has ascended to an important role as San Francisco's third corner, but it's clear that the 49ers are a very banged-up football team that will be very grateful for a Week 9 bye that will give them chance to heal and rest up for a critical stretch run.
With Christian McCaffrey reportedly set to take part in a bonus practice during the bye week, the 49ers appear poised to finally get their most important skill position player back following the week off.
But the recuperation for period for this quartet of injured players and the other members of the roster will arguably be just as important to the 49ers' hopes of turning an up-and-down start to the season into one in which they again contend for the Super Bowl.
It was already obvious going into this game that the 49ers were in need of a bye purely for a mental reset. The injuries they suffered against Dallas served to illustrate how important it will be in helping them get healthy.
