The San Francisco 49ers' running game was non-existent in their defeat to the Miami Dolphins last week, which rookie Isaac Guerendo missed because of a hamstring injury.
San Francisco started Patrick Taylor Jr. at running back in his absence but, behind a banged-up offensive line, the former Green Bay Packer finishing with just 24 yards. Quarterback Brock Purdy was the Niners' leading rusher with 26 yards.
But Guerendo is off the injury report and ready to return to the starting lineup in the Niners' penultimate game of the season against the Detroit Lions.
He practiced in full on Friday, but the problem is he will be running behind a much-changed offensive line.
With left tackle Trent Williams and his backup Jaylon Moore both gone for the season, the 49ers will have at least one new starter at tackle, and it could be two with right tackle Colton McKivitz listed as questionable with a knee injury. McKivitz missed the final two practices of the week.
If he cannot play then the 49ers' starters at tackle would likely be recent signings Austen Pleasants and Charlie Heck. Spencer Burford, who filled in for Moore last week, is out with a calf injury. Left guard Aaron Banks is set to go on injured reserve with an MCL injury, meaning Nick Zakelj is set to step in with Burford also out.
Safety Ji'Ayir Brown (ankle) is also questionable, as is rookie linebacker Tatum Bethune, who could be activated from injured reserve for this game.
All-Pro cornerback Charvarius Ward is questionable because of a personal matter.
Ward missed three straight games earlier in the season following the tragic death of his one-year-old daughter. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Shanahan reassured that Ward's absence this time was for "good news".
