Jake Moody's nickname is 'Money Moody', the San Francisco 49ers picked the kicker in the top 100 for moments like the one he faced against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. In his first such experience of attempting an NFL game-winner, he could not deliver.

After a game in which San Francisco's offense had struggled to get anything going, in part due to injuries to Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey, the 49ers drove down to the Cleveland 23-yard line to give Moody the chance to the hero. Instead, he pushed the kick wide right, handing the 49ers' their first loss in a 19-17 defeat.

Moody's miss will be the headline, and conjecture over his draft position will start a firestorm on social media, but the third-round rookie's inaccuracy was far from the sole reason the 49ers lost a game they had in the palm of their hand.

The Niners were flagged for 12 accepted penalties for 105 yards, the most crucial of which came on a third-down stop on the Browns' final go-ahead drive, with a highly contentious roughness penalty against Tashaun Gipson gifting the Browns a new set of downs.

There will be great debate about that flag in the coming days, yet the final penalty figure was illustrative of the failures of execution that defined the 49ers' performance.

Most of those were on offense, with Brock Purdy and an attack that shredded Dallas for 42 points desperately struggling to move the ball against a ferocious Browns defense.

Prior to the would-be game-winning drive, San Francisco had seven yards of the offense in the first half, the Niners' only second-half points coming on an eight-yard Jordan Mason touchdown that followed a Deommodore Lenoir interception.

With Samuel and McCaffrey both out of the game, the 49ers simply did not have enough answers, missed opportunities including a drop on a deep throw from Purdy to Aiyuk and an overthrow of a wide-open McCaffrey coming back to bite San Francisco in the worst way.

Elite-level sports have a way of punishing sloppy and ill-disciplined play, and that's what happened to the 49ers.

They now must lick their wounds, and assess the damage to their two most versatile offensive playmakers, with the frustration doubled by the fact both their defense and the offense eventually came up with the solutions to allow them to squeak out a win, only to have it snatched away in heartbreaking fashion.
