The Kansas City Chiefs confirmed on Friday that left guard Joe Thuney will not play in Super Bowl 58, in what would appear to be a huge boost to the San Francisco 49ers defense.
But the 49ers won't be viewing it that way, at least according to one of the men who would appear set to be a primary beneficiary of Thuney's absence.
A pec injury will keep Thuney out of the game, meaning Nick Allegretti will step in, just as he did in the AFC Championship Game.
But defensive tackle Javon Hargrave doesn't view Allegretti's presence as something that gives the San Francisco defense a potentially decisive edge in Sunday's blockbuster matchup.
"We know they got a veteran guy filling in if Thuney ain't going," Hargrave told A to Z Sports on Wednesday.
"So there's really no weakness still, we've just got to put our hard hats on and get to work."
Allegretti's numbers from the title game against the title game don't reflect Hargrave's comments. He allowed a team-high four pressures against the Baltimore Ravens, including a sack of Patrick Mahomes.
The 49ers' hopes of taking advantage of Thuney's absence will be greater if Hargrave's defensive tackle running mate Arik Armstead is able to play.
Armstead was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday having missed both practices last week with knee and foot issues that have bothered him since December.
The longest-tenured 49er has nine pressures across the two playoff games so far, second behind Nick Bosa (15), with his tally three more than that of Hargrave.
"He our captain so any time you can get big cap back, it's gonna be a positive for the whole group," Hargrave said of Armstead. "So we're just happy to see him back with us and back practicing and we all just want to win and support each other."
