John Lynch recently received a contract extension from the San Francisco 49ers, and it has now been revealed that it came with a new title.
NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported that Lynch's new contract, announced on September 22 alongside an extension for head coach Kyle Shanahan, saw the San Francisco general manager also named president of football operations.
That promotion could be a precursor to another move next offseason to secure the services of a different member of the front office for the long term.
Assistant general manager Adam Peters has received significant interest from rival teams in recent years but has yet to land a general manager role.
Peters has been with the 49ers since 2017, joining after Lynch and Shanahan began their tenure and has significant say in personnel decisions.
He has played a crucial role in the Niners building one of the best rosters in the NFL. Given his influence and the likelihood of future interest in his services, it would be no surprise to see the 49ers ward off potential suitors by promoting him to general manager with Lynch retaining his more prestigious title and continuing to oversee the overall operations of the personnel department.
