Jake Moody hardly made those doubting his selection as a third-round pick of the 49ers feel any better with his performance in their preseason opener, but the San Francisco kicker showed little concern about his pair of missed field goals.

Moody, whom the 49ers drafted in part because of a leg that has allowed to make kicks from 60 yards in practice, was unsuccessful with kicks of 40 and 58, spraying his efforts well wide on both occasions.

The 99th overall selection was not deterred by either of those misses, however, believing it is best to get such errors out of the way during games in which the score is meaningless.

Moody told reporters:

"Second field goal, that one was tough, 58 yards, it’s a longer one, but I had all the confidence in the world that I could go out there and nail it, just got to wash away the first one. First one felt good, it just happens. I’m glad it happened now, there’s a lot to learn from it, move on to the next one."

The former Michigan man was iced by Raiders coach Josh McDaniels on both kicks. McDaniels called timeout before each of his attempts, and Moody accepted he may have to develop a way to deal with such tactics when things get serious.

He added: "It’s something to learn from, we’re just going to see if we can go through a different routine I guess to deal with the extra time in between the kick. Lot of good learning experiences for the first game."

Moody's sentiments around his misses were shared by his head coach, who expressed a distinct lack of concern.

Said Shanahan:

"It's unfortunate because I know the pressure's on him when everyone's looking, and I know he missed those two today, but he's been great in practice. "I was just excited to attempt a long one, which was fun, but until it was missed. But he's been great. He handles himself well. So no issues here with me."

Shanahan won't overreact to anything that happens in preseason, and it's reassuring that Moody's misses don't appear to have impacted his confidence in any way.

But when a team takes a kicker in the top 100, the scrutiny is bound to be relentless. Moody needs to split the uprights soon to inspire confidence, and the questions about his selection will only grow more pointed if he continues to struggle once the regular season starts.
