Steve Wilks is not the only San Francisco 49ers assistant attracting interest from rival teams.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that the Niners' passing game coordinator, Klint Kubiak, is expected to interview for the vacant offensive coordinator position with the Chicago Bears.

Kubiak previously held the same role with the Denver Broncos during the 2022 season.

Though Kyle Shanahan has always called the plays for San Francisco, it is no surprise Kubiak has caught the Bears' eye given the remarkable performance of the 49er offense in 2023.

San Francisco finished the regular season first in the NFL by DVOA, Expected Points Added per play and Success Rate. In the passing game, Brock Purdy finished with a franchise record 4,280 yards along with 31 touchdowns, leading the league in touchdown percentage, passer rating, QBR and every yards per attempt metric.

Kubiak played a role in Purdy spending much of the season in the MVP conversation, so it makes sense another team may want to see if he can have the same influence on their passing game.

For the 49ers, who have gotten very used to replacing assistants in recent years, the threat of losing another comes with the territory of being so successful with the finest offensive mind of his generation as head coach.

It's an occupational hazard, and one they will gladly accept as long as they continue to dominate in the NFC.
