Ricky Pearsall wait to make his debut in an NFL game goes on.
The San Francisco 49ers' first-round pick did not have his practice window opened ahead of their Week 5 game with the Arizona Cardinals, meaning he remains on the non-football injury list.
Pearsall has been on the NFI list since he was the victim of an attempted armed robbery that saw him shot through the chest on August 31. The wide receiver incredibly escaped without any damage to his organs.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday that the Niners did not feel Pearsall was quite ready to return to the field just over four weeks on from that traumatic incident.
But he sounded an optimistic note despite the disappointing news surrounding the 31st overall pick.
"I don't really watch the guys' rehab and stuff," Shanahan explained.
"I just get reports on it, talk to the guys. I know he is really close. When he's good to go, himself and the medical staff, we'll be pumped to have him back. Ricky is a hell of a player."
Additionally, Shanahan added that the shoulder subluxation that had impacted Pearsall's preparations for his rookie year prior to the shooting is no longer a concern.
"No, it was fine before he got hurt," said Shanahan.
Pearsall being ready to potentially play against the Cardinals would have served as a huge psychological boost for the 49ers going into a key divisional game.
But with quarterback Brock Purdy and the passing game thriving even as Brandon Aiyuk has endured a slow start and Deebo Samuel and George Kittle have battled injuries, there is little need for the 49ers to rush him back.
With a short week after the Cardinals game as the 49ers travel to face the Seattle Seahawks a week from Thursday, the Super Bowl rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 would appear to be a more realistic target for the former Florida wideout.
Pearsall playing and making an impact against the team that has twice defied the 49ers' Super Bowl dreams would be the stuff of fairytales and just reward for a player who has been through so much.
49ers’ lengthy first injury report for Week 5 game with Cardinals might not be as dire as it seems
They’re being smart with it.
