The San Francisco 49ers are set to lose on the key architects of their star-studded roster.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Friday that assistant general manager Adam Peters is set to be hired as the general manager of the Washington Commanders.

Peters, who may have the title of 'president of football operations', was one of the first hires of 49ers general manager John Lynch after he and head coach Kyle Shanahan took over in 2017.

He has drawn consistent interest from rival teams in recent years having played a crucial role in the 49ers assembling a deep and talented roster that stands as the best in the NFC if not the entire NFL.

Now Lynch must find a new key lieutenant in the front office after Peters agreed to take on the task of leading the Commanders' rebuild.

Martin Mayhew, the current Commanders GM who was hired away from the 49ers, has been mentioned as a potential candidate to return if he is deemed surplus to requirements by former colleague Peters.

Tom Telesco, the recently fired Los Angeles Chargers GM, was also talked up as a possibility in a recent piece by Matt Barrows of The Athletic on account of his strong relationship with Lynch.
