Dre Greenlaw's long road back to the field following his devastating Achilles injury in Super Bowl 58 will extend for at least another week.

The 49ers will not activate the linebacker to the 53-man roster from PUP list having opened his practice window this week, Kyle Shanahan confirmed in his Friday press conference ahead of Sunday's Week 13 matchup with the Buffalo Bills.

Greenlaw, who tore his Achilles running onto the field for a series in the second quarter of the 49ers' heartbreaking Super Bowl defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, was a limited participant in all three days of practice this week.

The absence of his physicality, sideline-to-sideline speed in pursuit and his prowess in coverage has been all too apparent as the 49ers have limped to a 5-6 record, De'Vondre Campbell's understandable struggles to make the same level of impact magnified by Fred Warner playing on a broken ankle since Week 4.

And the 49ers will have to wait to slide Greenlaw back in to his WILL linebacker spot next to Fred Warner, with Shanahan's previous prediction that he would require an elongated ramp up period proving prescient.

Shanahan said of Greenlaw: "He had a real good week, hopefully next week will be even better."

Asked about Greenlaw's status for the Week 14 game with the Chicago Bears, Shanahan described him as having an "outside chance" to play, noting that the short week they will face in playing the Los Angeles Rams the following Thursday is a complicating factor.
