The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a very successful season. One where they reached the conference championship on the back of a QB who was deemed "Mr. Irrelevant" by being selected with the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Of course with each offseason comes change.
Familiar faces leaving, not-so-familiar faces being brought in; a lot of teams can look quite different from year to year. The 49ers did a number of moves this offseason. They resigned their own, made a splash in open free agency, as well as they lost some key components of their 2022 roster.
One NFL analyst gave his thoughts on his favorite and least favorite move of their offseason.
Favorite: Strengthening a strength with addition of interior defender Javon Hargrave
Hargrave has earned back-to-back 90.0-plus pass rush grades and put up the first double-digit sack season of his career in 2022, so it’s not surprising the 30-year-old cashed in at such a high level. With pending extensions for young interior defenders such as Quinnen Williams, Jeffery Simmons, Dexter Lawrence and others, this deal will also move down the board of largest contracts at the position in short order.
The 49ers made headlines with their addition of Hargrave. Having a defensive line of Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Javon Kinlaw, Javon Hargrave, and Clelin Ferrell is sure to keep QBs and offensive coordinators restless the night before a matchup.
The 49ers already had one of the most dominant run defense units in the league last year. Allowing the second lowest amount of yards,1,321, the league's lowest yards per carry, with 3.4. They went out and spent the money to solidify their run defense and get better at rushing the passer.
Hargrave finished with a career-high 11 sacks last season. Putting him next to Nick Bosa can allow for that to happen again. The offense is going to be forced to double-team Bosa or Hargrave, leaving the other one in a one-on-one opportunity, freeing him up to better rush the passer.
Least favorite: Losing cornerback Emmanuel Moseley
Moseley looked like he was taking another step in the second year of his two-year, $9.384 million extension signed as a restricted free agent, starting off the 2022 season strong with a career-high 73.5 coverage grade through Week 5 before tearing his ACL leading up to Week 6. That injury is far removed from Week 1 of 2023, so it’s not as if Moseley recently got hurt and is beginning rehab. After effectively signing Moseley to a one-year, $6 million deal for 2022, San Francisco perhaps could’ve done that again to keep him.
Brad Spielberger, Pro Football Focus
The reasoning he gives for losing Moseley as his least favorite move is that Moseley looked like he was trending towards the right direction prior to his injury. He had a career-high PFF coverage grade (73.5) through week five. Leading up to week six, he would tear his ACL and that would end his season.
Mosely signed a one year six million deal with the Lions, this off-season, and Brad suggests the 49ers could have done that to retain his services.
