The San Francisco 49ers can add another weapon to their already elite offense by signing one UDFA to their 53-man roster this offseason.
The offseason, after free agency and the NFL draft, of course, is all about finding hidden talent through the guys that maybe didn't get drafted and haven't gotten much of a shot. That's what the rookie minicamp is all about. For the 49ers, their rookie minicamp is May 12-13, where we will get to hear from some of the payers drafted and undrafted. We will also likely get to hear from Kyle Shanahan.
The 49ers brought in some guys who were really good in college. They targeted players that play a position of need for the 49ers and guys who could add depth. They didn't get to target everything in the draft, so, that's where the UDFA market comes in.
According to one NFL analyst, there is one UDFA that we should be watching out for to make the 53-man roster, which is saying a lot about how good this guy must be because the 49ers roster is pretty good as things currently stand.
San Francisco 49ers: Jack Colletto, FB/TE, Oregon State This could be Kyle Juszczyk’s understudy. Colletto is not quite the athlete the current do-it-all 49ers fullback is, but it’s kind of close. The 6-2, 237-pounder was the 2022 Hornung Award winner, given annually to the most versatile player in college football. He arrived at Oregon State as a quarterback before moving to a linebacker/fullback/running back role. San Francisco also added talented Shepherd guard Joey Fisher. –Nick Baumgardner, The Athletic
The thing that could land Colletto a job with the 49ers is just how versatile he is. He can play full back and tight end, and historically, the 49ers like guys like that. There is Kyle Juszczyk, who does that now, and there was Delanie Walker, who played wide receiver, tight end, and full back all for the 49ers.
This is a guy who could be valuable to the 49ers because of that skill. Be watching for him in training camp to see if there are any storylines of great things he may have done in camp. If this guy shows out in camp, it could be a good sign that he will have a better chance to make the roster.
