NFL Draft insider believes San Francisco 49ers could make colossal swing to fill their biggest need

The San Francisco 49ers did not do much to address the offensive line in free agency, potentially setting the stage for them to take advantage of a stacked class in the trenches in the 2024 NFL Draft.
While the interior of the offensive line, specifically the right guard spot, was the most obvious reason for their undoing in the overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58, the lack of a long-term solution at right tackle is the biggest hole on San Francisco's stacked roster.
The 49ers signed Colton McKivitz to a one-year extension last month, but McKivitz was a weak link throughout his first season starting at right tackle in 2023, and the addition of another year to his contract should not prohibit the Niners from pursuing a player at that position with the potential to blossom into a cornerstone on the O-Line.
And ESPN draft insider Jordan Reid believes San Francisco could surprise people by moving up from the 31st overall pick in the first round to select one of the draft's top tackles.
Reid pointed to Georgia's Amarius Mims and Arizona's Jordan Morgan as fits on day one, while mentioning Washington tackle Roger Rosengarten as a potential day-two target.
Morgan would likely be available at 31. That is where he stands on Destin Adams' latest big board for A to Z Sports, and ESPN analytics rates the chances of him being on the board for the Niners at 31 at over 80 percent.
The 49ers, though, might have reason to be reluctant to invest in Morgan, who is seen by many as a guard at the next level because of below average arm length. Despite excellent athletic traits that allow him to quickly square up pass rushers and easily climb to the second level in the run game, Morgan's game is blighted by inconsistencies in pass protection including a tendency to overset and issues against bull rushes.
Mims has no such issues against power, with his arm length that is in the 95th percentile for tackles enabling him to consistently beat opposing rushers to the punch and shut them down with his exceptionally strong hands and wide base. A freakish athlete at 6ft 7in and 340 who boasts tremendously smooth footwork in pass protection and enticing athleticism in space, he is a much more likely target for a trade up for the Niners. ESPN rates the odds of Mims being available at 31 at 20 percent.
Yet with Mims having only made eight starts and having already dealt with several injury issues, such a move would represent a big-time risk.
A move up for Mims would be a colossal swing, but it might be exactly the right move for the 49ers to make to instantly improve their play at right tackle and set themselves up for the long term at that spot with a player who is only scratching the surface of his incredible potential.
George Kittle has hilarious response to Kirk Cousins’ comments about the San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers did not get the job done in Super Bowl 58, but every team in the NFC is all too aware of their status in the conference. Kirk Cousins will attempt to lead the Atlanta Falcons to prominence in the NFC after leaving the Minnesota Vikings in free agency. But Cousins knows […]
