Clelin Ferrell will play no part in the San Francisco 49ers' playoff run.
The 49ers placed the defensive end on injured reserve, ending his season after the defensive end suffered a knee injury in San Francisco's meaningless regular-season finale.
In a corresponding move, the Niners made the expected decision to activate backup safety and core special teamer George Odum from injured reserve.
Ferrell had originally been expected to miss at least one playoff game with the injury.
It is a bitter end to a strong season from the former fourth overall pick, one made all the frustrating by the fact the injury happened in a game in which the 49ers had nothing to play for.
Ferrell had 3.5 sacks, six tackles for loss and a career-high 13 quarterback hits in the regular season. He will become a free agent at the end of the season.
Odum had been placed on injured reserve since suffering a torn bicep in the Thanksgiving win over the Seattle Seahawks. His return will be a massive boost to a special teams unit that has struggled for much of the season.
In additional moves, the 49ers have elevated defensive linemen Alex Barrett and T.Y. McGill from the practice squad.
Arik Armstead’s return should solve huge potential 49ers problem
It’s perfect timing.
