The San Francisco 49ers did their part, and then they got some help in primetime to move into the one seed in the NFC.
After defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13, the 49ers knew that victory over the Seattle Seahawks and an Eagles loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14 would put San Francisco in control of the conference.
That is exactly what happened. The 49ers held off the Seahawks to win 28-16, while the Eagles were soundly beaten 33-13 on the road by Dallas.
San Francisco, Dallas and Philadelphia are now in a three-way tie at 10-3. However, the 49ers' wins over both the Cowboys and Eagles put them in the top spot.
It means that if the season ended today, the 49ers would have a first-round bye and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs
The 49ers last had that luxury during the 2019 season, when they went all the way to the Super Bowl only to lose to the Kansas City Chiefs after a fourth-quarter collapse.
San Francisco knows exactly what it must do now. The 49ers' destiny is their hands and, if they win out, they will have their feet up during Wild Card weekend and get some crucial rest ahead of the Divisional Round.
