The San Francisco 49ers and the quarterback position seems like a never-ending saga, these days.

And, apparently, a previously-hidden layer has surfaced, courtesy of Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.

According to Florio, a lot of "chatter" surrounded the thought of a potential San Francisco-Minnesota Vikings trade that involved Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins. It wasn't just a bunch of media members tossing ideas against the wall, either. The chatter was produced by league executives.

"Apparently, at the scouting combine there was some chatter, there was some noise, among people within the broader league structure, not the media, but people in the league about Cousins being traded to the 49ers. That was a hot topic at one point in Indianapolis," Florio said, via Fansided's The Viking Age

Florio discussed the topic on his show, Pro Football Talk Live. The idea of a Kyle Shanahan-Cousins honestly makes sense, especially when considering a lot of Cousins' success is measured by the help around him. The 49ers have excellent weapons and a good-enough offensive line to where Cousins can thrive. Shanahan's system is also well-structured and really helps quarterbacks out. Cousins is very by-the-book when it comes to operating within the structure of a play -to a fault, even- and Shanahan will certainly provide that for him.

And, of course, there's Shanahan and Cousins' history. Shanahan was Cousins' offensive coordinator during Cousins' first two years in the league (2012-2013).

But this all seems moot, at this point. The 49ers have since dubbed Brock Purdy the "leader of the clubhouse" if/when healthy and everything they said at last week's meetings signals they aren't trading Trey Lance in 2023. And, they signed Sam Darnold. Both Darnold and Lance are expected to split first-team reps in camp while Purdy recovers from UCL surgery.

All of that makes the timing of Florio's statement odd. He owns a website that revolves around "chatter", so why didn't he write anything about this last month? Multiple search attempts produced nothing of the sort, so, there's certainly a chance Florio was riffing.

What's most interesting, here, is the idea the Vikings could be looking to move Cousins. Instead of the thought of San Fran acquiring him. The Vikings haven't extended Cousins and 2023 is the last year of his deal. It's certainly possible the team could be looking to trade him.

But, that's time better spent for a Vikings article. At this point, it's clear the 49ers aren't trading for Cousins.
