The San Fransisco 49ers won't have to wait much longer before they can get some skin in the game that is the 2023 NFL Draft. The team currently doesn't have any picks in the first 98 selections, but, they have three of the last four picks of the night and they're sure to make the most of those decisions.
There are plenty of needs, but the biggest, at least on the outside, are right tackle, defensive end, tight end, and even cornerback.
Fortunately, there are plenty and will still be plenty of prospects that can help the team.
Round 3, No. 99 overall: LB/S Marte Mapu, Sacramento State

The 49ers brought Mapu in for a top-30 visit, so there’s obvious interest, but it’s likely the point of the trip was to get an idea of his recovery timeline/status. Mapu tore his pec in February and is on a 4-6 month recovery timeline, so, there’s a chance he won’t be ready to practice or play until August.
That's fine for the 49ers, though, because they have capable starters at both safety positions and both linebacker positions. Marpu would be a matchup-specific weapon that would cover a variety of assignments when he's on the field. His presence would likely mean the subtraction of a LB, S, or CB, so it's not like the 49ers need him to be ready to go, now.
Mapu is a third-round talent that could up as a steal. The 49ers have made some solid Round 3 picks under John Lynch, so it wouldn't be a surprise if Mapu eventually joins the club.
Round 3, No. 101 overall: TE Luke Schoonmaker, Michigan

I didn’t think Schoonmaker would be here at this point because he’s one of the many quality tight ends in this draft class, but Dalton Kincaid was the only tight end taken off the board last night, so I’m thinking the NFL is still going to spend wisely when it comes to drafting the tight end position.
Schoonmaker isn't an elite athlete, by any means. But his game is well-rounded as a receiver and blocker. He won't drop many balls and his work ethic is where it needs to be in order to further his NFL game.
Hey, and he played quarterback in high school. So, ya know, just in case…
Round 3, No. 102 overall: DE Isaiah McGuire, Missouri

Man, this would cap off an incredible day and there’s a legit chance McGuire will be here at 102 to make it happen.
This dude can play football and he has the length, strength, and agility to continue to get better. That's obviously a good thing, but it's especially important for McGuire because he's a bit more unpolished than other defensive end prospects.
Nevertheless, he provides excellent depth for the defensive end position behind Nick Bosa, Clelin Ferrell, and Drake Jackson. Honestly, that's an extremely deep rotation, much like the interior quartet of Arik Armstead, Javon Hargrave, Javon Kinlaw, and Kerry Hyder Jr.
The 49ers are adamant about always building the defensive line and they need more depth at end, so this is a match made in heaven.
- Round 3, No. 99 overall: LB/S Marte Mapu, Sacramento State
- Round 3, No. 101 overall: TE Luke Schoonmaker, Michigan
- Round 3, No. 102 overall: DE Isaiah McGuire, Missouri
The 49ers still need to address the corner position and the tackle position, but nabbing these three players quickly beefs up the roster and adds some potential playmakers in 2023. All three players should be able to find their way onto the field, at some point.
