San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy details where he needs to improve in year two
San Francisco 49ers miracle quarterback Brock Purdy went on Fox Sports 910 to explain what he needs to improve on in year two of his career.
Brock Purdy went from zero to the hero during his rookie season with the San Francisco 49ers.
He started nine games and took the 49ers as far as he could before an injury stripped him of a chance at a Super Bowl. Fast forward to the offseason, Purdy had surgery on his injured arm and is already thinking about how he can improve as a quarterback in year two of his career.
“Starting with the cons, just footwork,” Purdy said last Thursday on Fox Sports 910's "Roc and Manuch with Jimmy B" when asked what some of the positives and negatives were of the 2022 season. “Being on time, every concept has its own timing. There were times last year when you could just tell I was still getting used to things, even when I was playing, the time of a slant with Brandon Aiyuk compared to Deeboe Samuel, they’re two different types of routes.
“So getting used to that kind of thing, that’s something I have to hammer away at in the offseason.”
Purdy went from a bench-level quarterback to leading the 49ers to eight straight wins and a shot at the NFC title. It was the 49ers' third NFC Championship game in four tries.
During his stretch of success, Purdy completed 67.1 percent of his pass attempts for 1,374 yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions.
In the playoffs, he also elevated his play.
The 23-year-old completed 65.1 percent of his attempts for 569 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 109.8 rating.
So, looking ahead to next season, Purdy wants his confidence to carry him deeper into the season than it did last year. And if you're doing the math, that means Super Bowl.
“And then the pros, just building off the leadership and the courage that I had,” Purdy said. “Stepping out and going to lead a team, you have to have confidence in the NFL and you can see it in the film. I just have to keep building off that as well.”
The good news is Purdy apparently has the backing of the front office. At the NFL's annual meeting, John Lynch came out and said he believes Purdy should have a fast track to the starting job next season if he is healthy.
"I think Brock has earned the right with the way he played that he's probably the leader in the clubhouse," said Lynch, via ESPN. "If we were to line up, he'd probably take that first snap."
Having the backing of the front office will give Purdy a license to really be who he is as a quarterback. And in a season where it is Super Bowl or bust, the 49ers need the best version of Purdy to compete in the NFC.
