An additional layer of intrigue around the 49ers' trade for Randy Gregory was that it took place two days before San Francisco faces the team that drafted him, the Cowboys.

But there will be no revenge game for Gregory, who left Dallas for Denver in 2022.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Gregory will not play in the huge primetime clash.

Shanahan revealed he met Gregory on Friday and that the former second-round pick passed his physical but will go back to Denver to see his family before returning on Monday.

The 49ers have gone against Gregory twice in the regular season and once in the playoffs in the 2021 season, and those meetings help informed their decision to trade for him.

Shanahan said of the motivation to strike the trade: "Playing against him over our career, as good of a rusher as we’ve gone against, and just the fact we had the opportunity that he was available, being able to add a guy like that, we feel he’ll make our team better, so we didn’t hesitate to do it."

Gregory has been suspended several times in his NFL career, but Shanahan is not worried about the type of character he is bringing into the locker room.

"You look into all that stuff always, you always judge a guy when you get to know him but also there’s a lot of people I know really well that speak extremely high of him and it’s extremely consistent, so I’m excited about the person we’ve got, the character of the guy from what I’ve been told from everyone who knows him. We love the tape, we know he’s messed up at times in the past, but from the person I’ve been told that he is, we’re really excited to have him here."

Playing the role of spectator against the Cowboys, Gregory will likely make his 49ers debut in Week 6, when San Francisco takes on the Browns in Cleveland.

The 49ers will make a corresponding roster move on Saturday. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported that move will be the release of veteran defensive lineman Kerry Hyder Jr.
