The San Francisco 49ers' playoff hopes are hanging by a thread, and they are undermanned going into a critical matchup with the Green Bay Packers.
San Francisco won't have its starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, because of a shoulder issue, while star pass rusher Nick Bosa is out with multiple hip/oblique injuries.
Those setbacks would appear to leave the Niners facing an uphill battle with Brandon Allen starting under center for a rematch of last season's Divisional Round playoff game.
But, even with the odds seemingly stacked against them, there are reasons for optimism for the 49ers.
Jordan Love's penchant for turnovers
If the 49ers are going to have a chance of winning in Lambeau, they need things to get messy. That means forcing turnovers and creating short fields for Allen.
Thankfully, in Jordan Love, they are facing the most turnover-prone quarterback in the NFL.
Love has thrown a league-leading 11 interceptions and, while the Packers signal-caller also offers substantial playmaking upside, his tendency to throw the ball to the other team will greatly encourage a defense that has recorded the seventh-most interceptions in the league, picking off 11 passes.
If the 49ers can take the ball away early and grab the initiative, their hopes of overcoming the odds will greatly improve.
George Kittle's return
The absence of All-Pro tight end Kittle was glaring as the 49ers struggled to create explosive plays against the Seattle Seahawks in a shock defeat last week.
Off the injury report this week, Kittle will be back and will likely be the focal point of the passing attack even with the change in quarterback.
Kittle has been enjoying another outstanding season following a first-team All-Pro campaign in 2023, and the numbers suggest he could be in for another profitable day against Green Bay.
Indeed, the Packers rank 28th in DVOA defending opposing tight ends, per FTN Fantasy.
With impressive rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper missing out because of an ankle injury, the conditions could be fertile for another standout showing from Kittle, one that could keep the 49ers in the mix for a shock victory if the defense can hold up its end of the bargain.
Green Bay's man weakness
Kittle is not the only passing game weapon who could be in line of a big day if San Francisco's attack functions well with Allen at the helm.
Wide receiver Jauan Jennings is enjoying a breakout year and is well-positioned to continue it at Lambeau.
Though the Packers' defensive system is very similar to that of the 49ers, with Green Bay heavily reliant on zone coverage, they do press the man coverage button quite consistently.
Per Sports Info Solutions, the Packers rank 15th in terms of man coverage rate, but their numbers when running it are not impressive.
Indeed, the Packers rank 25th in success rate on defense when using man coverage, and their vulnerability in that regard could play right into the hands of Jennings.
Per Sumer Sports, Jennings is fifth in yards per route run (3.13) against man among receivers with at least 50 routes versus that coverage.
Ranked 10th (per Pro Football Focus) in contested catch rate (61.1%) among receivers with at least 50 targets, Jennings, with his blend of his physicality and route-running prowess, has the ability to make the most of the Packers' apparent weakness when playing man, which may be exacerbated by the absence of Jaire Alexander.
For the 49ers to have a realistic shot, they need their weapons to rise to the occasion. Kittle and Jennings are top of the list in terms of responsibility in making this a game.
