There hasn't been much for the San Francisco 49ers to celebrate in a hugely disappointing 2024 season, but their rookie class has provided plenty of reason for optimism for the future.
While first-round pick Ricky Pearsall did not cover himself in glory against the Miami Dolphins in Week 16, committing a key penalty that cost the Niners a potential touchdown, and impressive third-rounder Dominick Puni was part of a poor effort from a banged-up offensive line, second-round selection Renardo Green continued to excel.
Green, whom the 49ers drafted as much for his physicality in the run game as for his coverage, racked up 10 tackles and a pass breakup.
The former Florida State star now has 54 tackles for the season, the fourth-most among rookie cornerbacks, while he has nine passes defensed on the year.
Green's PBU tally puts him third in franchise history for breakups in a single season registered by a rookie corner.
And he is only three away from setting the franchise record.
Green trails only Pierson Prioleau (10 in 1999) and Jason Webster (11 in 2000) and has two more games in which to surpass that duo.
His pass breakup in the 29-17 defeat to Miami came in the third quarter against Tyreek Hill, preventing a second touchdown for the Dolphins' star wideout.
That is what has been so impressive about Green's opening campaign in the NFL. He has given up big plays and was not perfect against Miami, but he plays with a short memory and consistently looks composed and ready for the challenge of matching up with any receiver, regardless of their pedigree.
Green has been one of the 49ers' best coverage defenders in 2024 and, with his ability to make plays on the ball and have an impact against the run, he appears primed to become a cornerstone of the San Francisco defense.
49ers edging closer to netting crucial asset that will pile even more pressure on an already huge offseason
It would be a huge boost to their resources.
