While the San Francisco 49ers will have Brock Purdy for the Week 8 game with the Cincinnati Bengals, they won't have Deebo Samuel, and the Niners elevated a wide receiver from the practice squad to fill the void.
Samuel will miss a second successive game with a hairline fracture in his shoulder. The 49ers are hopeful their versatile wideout will return after their Week 9 bye.
On Monday, the 49ers elevated Chris Conley from the practice squad to take Samuel's spot for the loss to the Minnesota Vikings. This time, it is the turn of Willie Snead IV.
Had Conley been elevated again, it would have marked his third and final promotion of the season.
Instead, fellow veteran Snead will make his first appearance since the Week 4 win over the Arizona Cardinals, when he was elevated due to an injury to Jauan Jennings.
Snead, who played in four games for the 49ers last year, made his first catch as a 49er in the victory over Arizona.
In addition to Snead, the 49ers also elevated cornerback Kendall Sheffield.
Sheffield has already featured in two games this season. If the 49ers wish to utilize him again, they will need to sign him to the active roster. Fellow corner Shemar Jean-Charles has also reached his limit of elevations having featured in Monday's loss in Minnesota.
The 49ers have reportedly been working the phones ahead of the trade deadline with cornerback, per Dianna Russini of The Athletic, a position they are targeting. Not being able to use Jean-Charles or Sheffield without singing them to the active roster may be an extra motivating factor in the Niners adding a more high-profile player at the position next week.
