Thursday Night Football this week was supposed to be one of the best games of a rather “meh” slate that is Week 5 in the NFL. A battle between two of the league’s best coaches who have a long history together, this one could go a long way in crowning a division champ down the road.

But for the San Francisco 49ers, the injuries are starting to become unbearable. Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle, Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, and the loss of Nick Bosa were already a lot to shoulder. But now Brock Purdy is out again, and it begs the question of what happens the rest of the year with this 49ers team?

Brock Purdy, Jauan Jennings, and Ricky Pearsall all out against the Rams

“Losing Purdy is a tough blow, but the even bigger issue could be the loss of weapons for backup QB Mac Jones. The Rams cornerback room won’t knock anyone’s socks off, but they won’t have to worry about Jauan Jennings or Ricky Pearsall (Oh yeah, or George Kittle). While Demarcus Robinson is a solid veteran, the upside of the pass catcher group for SF has heavily diminished. Expect the Rams to heat up Jones as much as possible since they possess one of the most talented defensive lines in the NFL.”

“It’s hard to see much consistent success for the 49ers offense without Purdy or those receivers, so Kyle Shanahan will have to pull a rabbit out of the hat in order to give his team a shot in this one on a short week for TNF.” – Adam Holt, A to Z Sports

Mac Jones was solid in his two starts while he still had some weapons at his disposal. He averaged a 66 percent completion percentage, two touchdowns, 0.5 interceptions, and 281 yards passing.

That came against the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals, however. Not a Chris Shula-led defense whose secondary is starting to match the tempo and intensity of its pass rush. But that’s all in the micro.

In the macro, the 49ers are 3-1, yet it feels like they are 0-4. The injuries are starting to become too much for anyone to overcome. It was clear last week that Purdy wasn’t right, or at the very least was rusty, evidenced by his two interceptions and less than 58 percent completion percentage.

With injuries becoming such a common theme in San Francisco over the years, it’s time to take a long, hard look in the mirror and figure out what’s going on.
