When the San Francisco 49ers signed Sam Darnold, the organization knew he was talented, despite his inability to put together a truly efficient and productive season as a starter.

The 2022 season was his best one yet in terms of productivity. And Darnold's promise has one NFL reporter claiming Darnold is the most talented thrower of the football in 49ers team history. You can't make this up.

“Sam Darnold might be — can I say this — the most talented thrower of the football that the 49ers have ever had,” NBC Sports San Francisco reporter Matt Maiocco said during a Thursday appearance on KNBR’s “Murph & Mac Podcast.

“Let’s just put him in the very high echelon of guys who can just drop back in the pocket and throw the football… I think that he hasn’t really had any chance to succeed since his college days are over. I think he’s had four head coaches in five years, five offensive coordinators in five years. He’s a talented guy.”

Darnold has yet to play a game for the Niners. He was signed on a one-year deal early in the NFL's free agency period. And it is hard to imagine he is the most talented quarterback when the 49ers have legends and Hall of Famers like Joe Montana and Steve Young who won a combined five Super Bowl titles.

This may be one of those takes that everyone looks back on and laughs at because it is so out there that it doesn't seem real. But alas, it is.
