The San Francisco 49ers are set to make a move they have wanted to make for several weeks and sign veteran cornerback Jason Verrett to the practice squad.

A series of injuries, mainly at the safety position, that have necessitated other moves had prevented the Niners from bringing back Verrett, which they stated their intention to do last month.

But after Sunday's Week 14 win over the Seattle Seahawks, NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported the 49ers will now sign Verrett, and the timing could hardly be better.

Verrett, who was a member of the 49ers between 2019 and 2022, was in attendance as the 49ers swept Seattle with a 28-16 victory.

That game saw the Niners' No. 1 corner Charvarius Ward go down with a groin injury on the first series. Ward was seen running on the sideline but did not return.

Afterward, head coach Kyle Shanahan could not say with any certainty how long Ward would be out.

As such, the move to bring back Verrett makes even more season. The former Pro Bowler is one of the hard-luck stories of modern NFL history, with a succession of devastating injuries keeping him from realizing the sky-high potential he displayed early in his career.

But the 49ers have a strong relationship and know that, when healthy, they can rely on him. Verrett was a huge bright spot for the 49ers in a 2020 season where he was one of the few players to avoid injury and headed into 2021 as a starter.

However, he tore his ACL in Week 1 of that season and then, days after coming off PUP, suffered a torn Achilles that ended his 2022 campaign.

Verrett signed with the Houston Texans practice squad in October but was released last month before working out with the Niners.

The 49ers' secondary held up very well without Ward against Seattle, with Ambry Thomas, Deommodore Lenoir and Isaiah Oliver all impressing. Yet behind that trio the 49ers have only Samuel Womack III and rookie Darrell Luter Jr, who missed the game with a hamstring injury.

Womack has only one start in his career so, if required, Verrett gives them an option with substantial experience of starting games in which he has impressed, while his return provides him with a richly deserved opportunity to be part of a team that is right now in the box seat to play in the Super Bowl in February.
