The 49ers aren’t exactly short on running back depth, but they added some more on Tuesday, bringing back a familiar face for his third spell with the team.

San Francisco signed Jeremy McNichols to its practice squad, releasing tight end Troy Fumagalli.

McNichols was on the 49ers’ preseason roster and previously played for the team back in 2017.

He would appear unlikely to have a chance of featuring for San Francisco in the 2023 regular season.

The 49ers run game is primarily powered by NFL rushing leader Christian McCaffrey. Behind him, the 49ers have their 2021 rushing leader Elijah Mitchell as well as power backs Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price.

The decision to bring back McNichols could be interpreted as a sign the 49ers are looking to move one of those backs behind McCaffrey on the depth chart. Even if that happens, McNichols would still only be their fourth running back, making notable playing time unlikely.

If nothing else, McNichols gives the Niners another back who is familiar with the team and the system. Given the nature of the position and the high risk of injuries, it doesn’t hurt to have another insurance policy who offers those qualities.
