The San Francisco 49ers clearly needed help on the interior of the defensive line, and they have added some by reportedly agreeing to terms with Sebastian Joseph-Day.

San Francisco has come to a deal with Joseph-Day, per Jason McCourty, after the defensive tackle was released by the Los Angeles Chargers and cleared waivers.

Joseph-Day fills a big-time need for a 49ers D-Line that has been without starting defensive tackle Arik Armstead for the last three games because of knee and foot injuries. As of Tuesday, Kyle Shanahan could provide no clear timeline for Armstead's return. San Francisco's depth up front was hit further during the Week 15 win over the Arizona Cardinals, which saw Kalia Davis suffer an ankle injury that led to him being placed on injured reserve.

The 49ers did get back starter Javon Hargrave from a hamstring injury in Monday's Christmas Day game with the Baltimore Ravens. While their run defense improved from its efforts against the Cardinals, a game in which they gave up 234 yards on the ground, San Francisco still surrendered 102 rushing yards, with quarterback Lamar Jackson averaging 6.4 yards per rush in a 33-19 win for Baltimore.

Joseph-Day's addition gives them a vastly experienced and highly regarded run defender who can provide the 49ers with more consistency in that area of the game.

His arrival should also allow Javon Kinlaw to focus more on pass-rushing downs, on which the former first-round pick has impressed with his ability to regularly push the pocket.

Joseph-Day may not be able to make much of an impact in Week 17, with the 49ers facing the Washington Commanders on the road on a short week.

However, his presence should make the 49ers better-equipped for the challenges they will face in the postseason, which could include the run games of the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys as well as a potential renewal of acquaintances with Jackson and the Ravens.

Joseph-Day has three sacks to his name this season, along with a career-high 11 quarterback hits.

If he does not play against the Commanders, Joseph-Day could make his 49ers debut in their regular-season finale against the team that drafted him, the Los Angeles Rams.

The 49ers announced earlier on Tuesday that they had waived Willie Snead IV from the active roster and released defensive lineman Taylor Stallworth from the practice squad, clearing the way for Joseph-Day to be signed to the 53.
