The San Francisco 49ers are light on depth at the safety position and have made a move to address that by adding a Super Bowl champion to the roster.
San Francisco, per NFL Media's Ian Rapport, have signed veteran Logan Ryan.
Ryan won titles with the New England Patriots in the 2014 and 2016 seasons and can play several positions in the secondary, though he has primarily been used as a safety in recent years.
He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2022 season, playing 318 of his 448 snaps at free safety.
Ryan started six of his nine games for Tampa Bay last year, recording one interception and three pass breakups.
In 10 seasons, he has 19 interceptions and 98 pass breakups.
Ryan will serve as insurance for veteran Tashaun Gipson and rookie Ji'Ayir Brown, the latter catapulted into the starting lineup by the torn ACL Talanoa Hufanga suffered against the Buccaneers in Week 11. Backup and special teamer George Odum sustained a torn biceps muscle in the subsequent game against the Seattle Seahawks on Thanksgiving.
The 49ers last week signed veteran Erik Harris to the practice squad. He was elevated to the gameday roster for the Week 13 blowout win over the Philadelphia Eagles. The 49ers can elevate him two more times before he must be promoted to the active roster if they want to use Harris again.
San Francisco would need to release a player to make room for Ryan. That corresponding move has not been reported as yet.
