The San Francisco 49ers-Brandon Aiyuk saga continues. The latest step forward is an intriguing one for both sides. Aiyuk requested a trade from San Francisco exactly one week ago today on July 16th. 

The news comes after Aiyuk met with 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan late last month to discuss the contract impasse.

That discussion was reportedly a positive one, but Garafolo reported that, even in the wake of the meeting, the 49ers haven't been willing to engage in negotiations, a stance they have held since May. — Nicholas McGee

It seems like Aiyuk is keeping his options open when it comes to his potential hold out from the 49ers.

This move does not indicate any particular progress on an extension between the 49ers and their wideout. Aiyuk can choose to hold out, but he is, at least, reporting to the team for camp. He's in the building. 

Training camp is an important piece of the offseason for many players around the NFL. For Aiyuk, his role in SF is carved out. He and Deebo Samuel are the team's top wide receivers, and George Kittle rounds out the most important pass catching trio for Brock Purdy's offense. 

This move by Aiyuk could be a signal to the franchise that he is a leader for the team. He's showing up, even though he is frustrated with his personal contract situation. 

In a way, he is looking past that to be with his teammates, some of which could use his insight to improve or lock down a role with the 49ers in 2024.
