The San Francisco 49ers turned the page from their agonizing Super Bowl 58 loss a long time ago, but now we know the date on which their preparations to try to climb the mountain again will get serious.
Training camp dates for all 32 teams were confirmed on Tuesday.
San Francisco's rookies will report for their first training camp will report on July 16.
They will be followed by the rest of the roster a week later, with veterans reporting on July 23.
That latter date carries an extra significance for the 49ers, who still have yet to sign All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to a long-term extension.
San Francisco has typically stuck to a timeline of getting its veteran stars signed to extensions by the start of training camp, so confirmation of the start of camp gives the 49ers a target date to work towards.
Aiyuk is reported to have received an offer of a contract that would pay him $26 million annually. That is shy of his reported target, with Aiyuk said to want a deal that surpasses the contract Amon-Ra St. Brown signed with the Detroit Lions. St. Brown will earn an average of $28 million over the first three years of a four-year, $120 million contract.
The contract saga took an interesting twist on Monday when Aiyuk posted a video to TikTok in which he is filmed telling Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, a close friend of the 2020 first-round pick, that the Niners said they do not want him back.
Aiyuk's claim immediately seemed dubious and was refuted by NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.
The 49ers obviously won't treat July 23 as a firm deadline and will continue negotiating with Aiyuk even if they do not have a deal by that date.
But San Francisco will naturally want to get Aiyuk, who skipped OTAs and mandatory minicamp, back for training camp as soon as possible. The 49ers did not get defensive end Nick Bosa signed a long-term deal until a few days before the 2023 season opener, and the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year has since indicated the saga had an adverse effect on his performance during the campaign.
San Francisco's training camp will be held at the team's SAP Performance Facility next to the 49ers' Levi's Stadium home.
The Niners' sole practices away from the facility will take place in Irvine, CA, when San Francisco takes part in a week of joint practices with the New Orleans Saints before traveling back to the Bay Area for a preseason game against the same opposition.
San Francisco begins preseason on the road against the Tennessee Titans on August 10 before facing the Saints eight days later. The 49ers conclude their exhibition season by returning to the scene of their Super Bowl defeat with a road game versus the Las Vegas Raiders on August 23 at Allegiant Stadium.
Perhaps the biggest question for the 49ers concerns Aiyuk's level of participation in their training camp and preseason schedule. The Niners will hope he is there for the entirety, but that may require them speeding up negotiations that appear to have hit th buffers.
