49ers TE George Kittle explains why he's frustrated heading into 2023

Unless you've lived under a rock the last few years, you should know all about the San Francisco 49ers and their awful injury luck with quarterbacks.
None of it was uglier than what the team went through in 2022, however. A preseason shoulder injury derailed plans to trade Jimmy Garoppolo. Then, Trey Lance fractured his ankle in Week 2 and missed the rest of the season. Garoppolo filled in for Lance, but was eventually ruled out for the rest of the season thanks to a Lisfranc injury that occurred in Week 13.
Next up was Brock Purdy, who injured his elbow in the NFC Championship matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. And, finally, Josh Johnson -the guy who came in to relieve Purdy- was later ruled out against the Eagles after suffering a concussion in the third quarter.
It's easy to see why all of the above is very frustrating for both the 49ers and their fans. One 49er in particular -superstar tight end George Kittle- recently spoke about his frustrations with the developments.
"I just wish that Purdy wouldn't have gotten hurt," Kittle said on the most recent episode of Taylor Lewan's and Will Compton's podcast, Bussin' With The Boys. "So that way, I would have gotten a full offseason with him, because I haven't had an offseason with a quarterback in three years. It's very frustrating.
"All I want to do is catch passes from whoever the starting quarterback is throughout the entire season, including the offseason."
Chemistry and cohesiveness is key in the NFL. The best teams find a way to maximize those two traits and the ones who don't, well, I think it's easy to imagine what happens to them. Kittle developed a great rapport with Purdy, too: he recorded 31 receptions for 435 yards and seven touchdowns over the course of eight games.
All one has to do is look at the connection between Kansas City Chiefs superstars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Those two are in a completely different stratosphere when it comes to their chemistry and it's the main reason why both players are going to go down as one of the most lethal connections -if not the most lethal connection- in NFL history.
"One, his [Kelce's] connection with Mahomes, you can see it like, from Mahomes' rookie year to now, the things they do together – they'll just get open within the timing of the play," said Kittle. "They just have this ultimate freedom that you can't develop unless you play with somebody for a long time.
"… Just their connection and how good they are together – that's one of the most unique relationships you can see on a football field."
Kittle has still produced at a high level, even with all the turmoil. It's completely reasonable to think his production would be even better if the 49ers could keep the same quarterback upright on a consistent basis.
And, if they could, maybe the 49ers would have that sixth Lombardi that's eluded them for nearly three decades.
