San Francisco 49ers hit with news that may prove to be more of a curse than a blessing to start their 2026 regular season

It’s usually a good thing to be featured in a standalone game to start your regular season in the NFL. It means that your team is expected to be one of the best in the league and that the hopes and expectations are high.

For the San Francisco 49ers, that is the exact scenario after a busy free agency period that saw them net a future Hall of Famer via Mike Evans, among others, and we haven’t even seen what they have in store for the NFL Draft. So the league rewarded the 49ers with a primetime game on Thursday, September 10th. Only, it’s the location of that game that may be problematic for the 49ers.

San Francisco 49ers to kick off the regular season with their first-ever game in Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne will be 17 hours ahead of San Francisco when the game rolls around. The contest will be kicking off at 8:35 pm EST, which means it would be a normal Sunday or Thursday night kickoff time if the game were being played in the Bay Area.

However, the game will start locally at 10:35 am. That means that either the 49ers will need to get to Melbourne early, acclimate their body clocks, practice schedules, and everything else to a morning game, or they will have to risk flying in at the last minute and trying to stay true to their schedule at home.

Jet lag is a real thing, even for NFL athletes. This move could go very well if the proper protocols are put in place, or it could end very poorly. What we know for a fact, however, is that this will be a good game.

49ers vs. Rams highlights Week 1 slate

While we await to see who the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks play as well as the rest of Week 1’s slate, it’s safe to say that this divisional matchup on a big stage will be one of the best of the week.

The last five times the teams have played, the game has been decided by an average margin of victory of less than a touchdown. It will be a fun game, in an even better atmosphere, as long as the teams can brave the time change.
