As the 49ers prepare to finalize their initial 53-man roster, head coach Kyle Shanahan will also be drawing up plans for which players he wants on his practice squad.
In addition to International Player Pathway offensive tackle Alfredo Gutierrez, the 49ers are allowed 16 players on the practice squad, which has become an increasingly important part of the team-building process in recent times.
The practice squad can feature six veteran players with no limit on their number of accrued seasons in the NFL. There is no restriction on the number of players with no accrued seasons, but a maximum of 10 players with two or fewer accrued seasons can be signed to the practice squad.
Up to two practice squad players can be activated on gameday without being elevated to the main roster. A single player can be activated three times a season but would need to be signed to the active roster beyond that.
Teams can also protect players from being signed off the practice squad by another team. Up to four players can be designated for such protection on the Tuesday of each week.
With the greater roster flexibility the practice squad rules allow, it is critical to get potentially impactful players signed to back up the main roster. Here we'll keep track of the players the 49ers have chosen to fulfil that capacity.
