The San Francisco 49ers, amid NFL free agency, are attempting to figure out a tough situation with one of their own players. The contract debacle with offensive tackle Trent Williams took another turn on Monday.

49ers are considering trading LT Trent Williams

Via Ian Rapoport, the 49ers are now open to trading star left tackle Trent Williams. The two sides have been discussing a new contract, but it has not gone well. Williams is set to carry a $38.8 million cap hit for the 2026 season. That would cover nearly 13 percent of the cap for SF.

Now, there is a possibility that the 49ers move on from him.

Williams turns 38 ears old this summer. Accordingly, it is tough to project him as a long-term answer for the 49ers offensive line. In that same ilk, though, any team looking to trade for him also understand it is probably a short-term investment.

“However, Williams has had an issue staying on the field. He hasn’t played a full season since 2013(!) and is entering his age-38 season. He did play over 1,000 snaps in 2025 after playing just 649 in 2024, but the injury occurred late in the season, and Williams battled through it in the playoffs. With those injuries and his age, it makes his financial costs a worrying factor for the 49ers’ front office.”

This situation only continues to take more twists. The 49ers have no true contingency plan on the roster if they move off of Williams. In fact, the tackle spot opposite him could see a shift this offseason as well.

We will see how aggressive San Fran is when it comes to offensive line during free agency and the NFL draft, regardless of the outcome with the All-Pro Williams.
