The San Francisco 49ers have done a lot of work on wide receivers in the draft, and they have also reportedly looked into adding at the position in free agency.
Per Mark Kaboly of The Athletic, the 49ers are one of several teams to have displayed "preliminary interest" in former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd.
Boyd is a free agent after spending eight seasons with the Bengals having been drafted in the second round in 2016.
He has 6,000 receiving yards in his career, that tally the 19th-most in the NFL since he entered the NFL.
But in 2023 he managed only 667 receiving yards, his fewest in a single season since 2017. His yards per target average of 6.8 was the lowest of his career.
Still, at 29, there's reason to believe Boyd still has something left in the tank, while his ability to play inside and out would certainly appeal to the 49ers. Though his counting stats indicate a drop-off, Boyd still averaged 3.1 yards of separation last year, per NextGen Stats, only slightly less than the Bengals' star receiver, Ja'Marr Chase (3.2).
Boyd would likely only be a short-term solution for a 49ers' receiving corps that may require a more long-term answer if it proves too expensive to keep both Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel around for the foreseeable future.
But if the draft does not fall in San Francisco's favor at wideout, then Boyd may be an option they return to later in the offseason.
