The 49ers are gunning for another run at a sixth Super Bowl title, and their preparations will ramp up this week as training camp begins.

San Francisco's rookies reported last week for strength and conditioning work, and they will be joined by the veterans and the 49ers' coaching staff on Tuesday.

The Niners will then hold their first practice on Wednesday.

It promises to be a fascinating training camp and preseason for the 49ers, for whom the main storyline will be Brock Purdy's recovery from surgery to repair a torn elbow ligament.

But Trey Lance and Sam Darnold's competition could prove to be arguably the most interesting — and perhaps most important depending on how Purdy recovers — backup quarterback battle in recent NFL history.

Between that competition, the attention on two rookie tight ends who will be hoping to take the strain off George Kittle, the spotlight on defensive end Drake Jackson as he ascends to a starting role and the focus on the lack of cornerback depth, there will be plenty to more to monitor as one of the deepest rosters in the NFL tunes up for its latest attempt to vindicate that status with a Lombardi Trophy.

While all the primary headlines will surround Purdy and Lance, another narrative to follow will be the performance of a defense that ranked first in DVOA last season but will, for the first time, in Kyle Shanahan's time as head coach, have to deal with a transition to a coordinator from outside the building in Steve Wilks.

Still, for as much as many consider the 49ers to be a team that operates a quarterback-less offense, it is what happens at the game's most important position in camp and preseason that could well decide whether the Niners finally realize their Super Bowl ambitions for the first time since the 1994 season.
