The 49ers will be without one of their best offensive players for their home opener.
San Francisco announced its inactives for the Week 3 clash with the Giants at Levi's Stadium on Thursday Night Football, with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk ruled out because of a shoulder injury suffered on the first series of the Week 2 win over the Rams.
Also ruled out for the 49ers is cornerback Ambry Thomas, who was in and out of the defeat of Los Angeles.
49ers' inactives for Week 3:
- Third QB Brandon Allen
- WR Brandon Aiyuk
- CB Ambry Thomas
- DL Kalia Davis
- OL Nick Zakelj
- RB Tyrion Davis-Price
- LB Jalen Graham
With Aiyuk unavailable, expect the 49ers to focus their passing game predominantly around Deebo Samuel, George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey.
Samuel and McCaffrey have combined for 468 yards from scrimmage so far this season, but tight end Kittle has been relatively quiet in the passing game, making six catches for 49 yards.
Though Thomas has played an unexpectedly big role in the 49ers' secondary this season, his absence won't change too much at cornerback. The main change will be Deommodore Lenoir staying outside full-time and Isaiah Oliver playing the slot. Lenoir had played some nickel snaps with Thomas taking his spot on the outside on those downs.
Veteran receiver Chris Conley takes Aiyuk's place on the gameday roster after being elevated from the practice squad along with corner Shemar Jean-Charles, who is set to make his 49ers debut. The 49ers also signed corner Tre Swilling to the 53-man roster from the practice squad after he made his NFL bow last week against the Rams.

It appears he isn’t quite ready to play.
