The speculation around the San Francisco 49ers' wide receiver corps remains intense heading into day two of the 2024 NFL Draft.
San Francisco took Florida wideout Ricky Pearsall with the 31st overall selection in the first round, increasing talk of them trading one of Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel.
The San Francisco Chronicle's Mike Silver reported Samuel is likely to be traded, and in this Day 2 mock draft, the 49ers deal their 2021 All-pro and find his replacement.
Trade – Deebo Samuel to the Patriots
The Patriots, per Mike Giardi of The Boston Sports Journal, have shown interest in a trade for Samuel. With a dearth of weapons, the most cap space in the NFL and the day two draft capital with which to entice the Niners, they stand as perhaps the likeliest suitor for the 2021 All-Pro.
In this scenario, let's say the Patriots are willing to part with pick 34 in the second round, with the Niners sending them Samuel and one of their three fourth-round selections (135 overall).
So who would take with that selection?
Round 2, Pick 34: Roger Rosengarten, OT, Washington
The 49ers have several day-two options at tackle in whom they have shown an interest. BYU's Kingsley Suamataia and Notre Dame's Blake Fisher both visited the 49ers for top-30 visits, as did Caedan Wallace of Penn State.
But there has been the most noise around Rosengarten. San Francisco general manager John Lynch and offensive line coach Chris Foerster traveled to Seattle to attend a private workout for Rosengarten, who played for Christian McCaffrey's father Ed in high school and has worked with former 49ers left tackle Joe Staley during the pre-draft process.
With the foot speed to excel in pass protection and the athleticism to thrive as a run blocker in space, Rosengarten would fit the 49er offense like a glove.
Round 2, Pick 63: Brandon Dorlus, DT, Oregon
The 49ers surprisingly passed on Illinois defensive tackle Johnny Newton with the 31st overall pick. If they trade Samuel to get up to the top of round two, Newton could be in play.
But the Niners have already shown significant interest in Dorlus by having him in Santa Clara for a 30 visit, and he would represent good value at the back end of the second as a destructive interior pass rusher who can also have a significant impact rushing off the edge.
Round 3, Pick 94: Malachi Corley, WR Western Kentucky
Regardless of whether the 49ers trade Samuel, the Niners are unlikely to be finished adding at the receiver position having done extensive work on it prior to the draft.
Corley is another player who met the Niners on a 30 visit and has consistently been compared to Samuel having been used in a much similar role during his time with Western Kentucky.
By drafting Corley, the 49ers would be getting a direct replacement for Samuel who, at least based on his college play, brings a little more upside as a downfield receiver and against man coverage. Crucially, they would be getting him at a substantially cheaper price.
