Brock Purdy's elbow surgery following his injury in the NFC Championship Game initially threatened to leave the 49ers facing the prospect of beginning the 2023 season without their presumed starting quarterback.

However, with training camp on the horizon, that possibility is becoming much less likely.

Previous reports have stated that Purdy is on schedule to recover from an operation to repair a torn Ulnar Collateral Ligament in time to face the Steelers in Week 1.

And that is seemingly still the case, with ESPN's Jeff Darlington delivering a positive update on the progress Purdy has made while he has been training away from the team in preparation for training camp.

In a reply to a question about the identity of the 49ers' Week 1 starter, Darlington posted on Threads

Brock Purdy. If he continues on his current rehab trajectory, I don’t think there’s much question about it. Kyle Shanahan feels pretty confident Purdy will be ready. Purdy has been rehabbing and training in Jacksonville with QB coach Will Hewlett, and he continues to make good progress.

If Purdy isn't ready in time for kickoff of the new campaign, the 49ers are confident they have two other quarterbacks they can win with in Trey Lance and Sam Darnold.

But having ended last season having played four quarterbacks, the Niners are hoping for certainty at the game's most important position.

A healthy Purdy, who won the trust of Kyle Shanahan with his stunning performance across five regular-season starts and two postseason starts prior to his injury in the title game, would give the 49ers that certainty.

Purdy still has several hurdles to overcome in training camp to reach the point where he is ready to assume the starting role. But to this point there has been no inkling of a setback. If he remains on that smooth path, he'll have the chance to prove he can reproduce last year's magic over a full season.
