The San Francisco 49ers have reached the point that has long since been looming on the horizon: decision time with quarterback Brock Purdy.

With the end of their 2024 regular season, Purdy, as a member of the 2022 draft class, is officially eligible for a contract extension.

The last pick in that draft is expected to command a lucrative contract following a remarkable start to his career, albeit one that tailed off slightly this season, after entering the league with zero expectations.

Had Purdy followed up a 2023 season in which he led the MVP race for most of the year and had the 49ers a play away from Super Bowl triumph with another impressive campaign, then they likely would have no qualms about making him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league.

But, following an uneven 2024 in which he missed two games through injury, San Francisco may be more reticent to pay him top of market money.

So the 49ers are faced with three choices. Acquiesce to paying him at the top of the market, try to find a middle ground, or kick the can down the road and keep him on the final year of his rookie deal in 2025, knowing they have the franchise tag in their back pocket for next offseason

The choice they make will have a defining impact on the next few years for the franchise following a hugely disappointing 6-11 season.

Only four other players from the 49ers' 2022 class remain on the roster, and none of Drake Jackson, Spencer Burford, Nick Zakelj or Kalia Davis are likely candidates for an extension.
